A rare and spectacular Edwardian era opal and diamond necklace with components that allow the piece to also be worn as a brooch. The central Australian opal is both impressive in size and in its vivid color play. The stone has an ocean blue body color with bright flashes of green and orange and subtle veins of violet. It has a closely arranged patches of color and measures a large 27 mm in length and 14.7 mm in width.
Delicate milgrain detailing surrounds the opal. Bright single cut diamonds are set around the opal, weighing a total of approximately 0.85 carats. They are G/H in color and VS/SI1 in clarity, overall. When the pendant is turned over, you can see a screwing component on the top by the bale. This allows the pendant to be separated from the necklace so that it can be worn as a brooch. This was quite an ingenious way that jewelers used to design their jewelry - so that the pieces can get the maximum amount of use and for them to be worn during the appropriate occasions. The brooch/pendant is crafted in platinum, while the attached chain is in 18K white gold. The chain has delicate filigree details on each link. It measures 21 inches in length. The spring ring is marked 18K for gold purity. An amazing piece of history that is still as beautiful and wearable today! Metal: Platinum Brooch and 18K White Gold Chain. Opal: 27 mm long by 14.7 mm wide. Diamonds: Approximately 0.85 carats.
Chain Length: 21 inches long. Pendant/Brooch Measurements: 1.9 inches long (including bale) by 0.8 inches wide. Markings: 18K on chain clasp. Condition: In good antique condition.
Some minor scratches and nicks to the front of the opal, not really visible unless carefully looped. The back of the opal has some crazing, as shown in the photos. The screwing mechanism works well.
